Rue de Bac, France " Our Lady of the
Miraculous Medal"
At 11:30 PM on July 18, 1830, St. Catherine Laboure was awakened by an
angel, who announced that Our Lady was going to soon appear in the convent
chapel. St. Catherine went with him to the church, only to find it
decorated and lit as if it was Christmas Eve.
After waiting at the communion rail for a while, Our Lady entered the
Sanctuary and sat down in the Director's chair. St. Catherine knelt down
and rested her hands on the Blessed Virgin's lap, which Catherine later
explained was the sweetest joy in her entire life.
During the following months, St. Catherine did everything the Blessed
Virgin asked her to do. On November 27, 1830, the first Sunday of Advent,
the Virgin Mary gave Catherine an important mission. Our Lady appeared on
a globe, with rays of beautiful light flowing from rings on Her fingers.
The Virgin said that the globe represented the earth, and the rays are
graces She sheds on us for those of us that ask for them. Not all of the
rings gave out light. Then an oval frame was formed around the Blessed
Virgin, on which these words were stamped in letters of gold:
" O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to
Thee. "
Then the Virgin said:
" Have a Medal struck according to this model, those who wear it
after being blessed shall receive great graces, especially if they wear it
around their neck. Graces will be abundant for those who have confidence.
"
Then, the vision turned around, and on the reverse was the letter M
surmounted by a cross, with a big line at the base, and underneath the M
were the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
The Medal was first known as the Medal of the Immaculate Conception,
but so many conversions and bodily cures for those who wore it with faith
and confidence happened, that it became known as the Miraculous Medal.
